Intel Allies with SME on Laptops

China News.com, 12/15/08

The Taiwanese Economic Daily News reports that Intel will move into the mainland white-label notebook computer market. Intel management for Mainland China reports that it will strengthen its partnerships with "knock-off" manufacturers and manufacturers new to the industry to provide design guidelines, reference platforms, and machine plans, as well as providing assistance with dedicated engineers, in a move to unseat Taiwanese CPU maker VIA Technologies, which has longstanding partnerships on the mainland.

Intel said that it is taking the question of "indirect partners" very seriously. By "indirect partners," the company means small- to medium-sized computer makers who purchase Intel products from retailers – including so-called "knock-off manufacturers." By contrast, Intel provides its products directly to HP, Asus, and other large OEMs.
