CCTV Exposes Problems with Other Search Engines

CCTV's "Morning News" once again revealed problems with Chinese search engines this morning. The State Food and Drug Administration recently issued a list of 23 websites promoting and selling fake medicines; despite the listing, these websites still turn up in major search engines, including Google China, China Yahoo, and Sogou, among others.
Editor's Note: In related news, Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) today revised its Q4 2008 guidance downward from the previously stated range of between RMB 1.025 bln (USD 151 mln) and RMB 1.055 bln (USD 155 mln) to a new, reduced range of between RMB 890 mln (USD 131 mln) and RMB 900 mln (USD 133 mln). One of the three main factors to which the company attributed the revision was its recent removal of paid search listings of customers in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors without licenses on file with Baidu. The company also said that after a thorough inspection of its customer base, it had removed a number of questionable paid search listings outside of the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. The third factor cited by the company was the economic slowdown in China, which it said is having a greater than expected impact on online marketing, particularly in machinery and franchising.
