Tencent Forces Users to Uninstall 'Rainbow QQ'
Sina Tech, 11/26/08
Tencent (0700.HK), maker of the popular QQ instant messaging platform, began efforts yesterday to force users to uninstall 'Rainbow QQ,' an unauthorized software add-on which introduces functionality showing other users' IP addresses and otherwise hidden online status. Now, if QQ detects that a user has installed the Rainbow QQ plug-in, it displays a message telling the user the plug-in is illegal and requires him to uninstall it before he can log in to QQ.
Rainbow QQ developer 51.com issued a statement saying that Tencent had no right to rule Rainbow QQ illegal on its own authority, noting that the application had already been registered with the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC).
51.com noted that Tencent itself had provided for-pay services allowing subscribers to see the online status of users who had chosen to display as offline (such as Tencent's "QQ Thousand-Mile Eye" service), similar to the functionality offered by Rainbow QQ.
