MIIT Announces September 2008 Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its September 2008 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 71.6 bln (USD 10.5 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 610.0 bln (USD 89.7 bln), up 8.3% over the same 9-month period of 2007.
Mobile subscribers grew by more than 8.0 mln in September to 624.0 mln. A total of 522 bln SMS messages were sent during the first nine months of the year, a 21.0% increase YoY.
Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the fourteenth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 0.9 mln to approximately 353.2 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined for the sixteenth straight month, with a net loss of 0.9 mln subs, dropping the total to 75.2 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased slightly, by 22,000, to 277.9 mln.
Broadband added nearly 1.5 mln new registered users to reach 80.8 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 81,000 users, dropping to 15.2 mln.
