Government to Subsidize Wuhan Telecom Handsets

Wuhan Telecom is claiming that rural residents in Hubei will soon enjoy a 13% government subsidy on CDMA handset purchases in order to improve the state of rural telecommunication.
Hubei Telecom's is currently in the process of determining economical handset models and promotion and pricing strategies based on the current mobile phone coverage and penetration rates of specific regions. A spokesperson for the company stated that Hubei Telecom will provide agricultural information to rural consumers as well as a platform for selling agricultural products.
The Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) have decided to begin four-year projects starting from December 2008 to promote home appliances and consumer electronics in rural areas of Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Chongqing and Shaanxi. Local residents who purchase color televisions, refrigerators, washing machines and mobile phones will receive a subsidy from the government of 13% of the market price.
