China Sees Influx of Gray Market G1 Handsets

DoNews, 10/27/08

Sources have revealed that since October 26, a large volume of gray market G1 phones have been smuggled into China from the U.S. Currently the phones are on sale at the Zhongguancun electronics market in Beijing for approximately RMB 3,999. Customers still need to purchase an unlock code for RMB 500 from U.S. operator T-Mobile if they wish to make use of the handset. Gray-market importers predict that even though a large number of phones are coming in to the market, the chances of price reductions on the G1 are not very high, due to costs involved with importing.

Editor's Note: The G1 is the first phone to be released based on Google's Android platform, and is manufactured by Taiwanese handset manufacturer HTC.
