Chongqing Telecom Introduces Free Fixed-to-CDMA Calls

Guangzhou Daily, 10/22/08

Since taking control of China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) CDMA network, Chongqing Telecom has introduced a promotion allowing free calls between fixed-line and CDMA phones. One fixed-line subscriber can assign two mobile numbers that s/he can call for free, with subscribers able to change one of these mobile numbers each month. CDMA subscribers are also able to choose two fixed-line numbers that can call their CDMA number free of charge.

A source knowledgeable on the situation also claimed that Chongqing Telecom was preparing to introduce a discounted PHS pricing plan that would be bundled together with CDMA plans, fixed-line plans and also broadband plans. The source claimed however that Chongqing Telecom had not yet received approval for the plan from China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), and was required to keep things low-key.
