The Beijing News, 10/22/08
Yesterday in Beijing at the P&T/Expo Comm China 2008, China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) debuted its new mobile business brand, "E-surfing", which is focused on individual users.
Si Furong, a general manager for the company, revealed that China Telecom will start releasing CDMA telephone numbers starting with the 189-prefix next month. These numbers will be targeted at mid- to high-end contract customers of the "E-surfing" brand.
According to Si, China Telecom will not be directly competing with China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) in all areas of the mobile services space, but will be reorganizing its fixed and mobile networks to provide some unique services. The company will use CDMA+WLAN to enhance its ability to provide data services.
Si went on to say that over the next 3-5 years it wouldn't lose its PHS users, and that China Telecom will introduce discounted packages to gradually shift PHS subscribers onto the CDMA network.
