New Unicom Sets Temporary Management Structure
CWW, 10/06/08
An informed source has revealed that the new China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) is currently making adjustments to its internal organization. These will temporarily increase the company's number of departments to 34. Marketing, construction, and also maintenance departments from the former Unicom and Netcom will still be kept separate from each other, whereas human resources, finance and other functional departments will be merged, although various departments may be split into sub-departments along former Unicom/Netcom lines.
Under the new structure, the northern provincial departments (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shandong and Henan) will operate directly under the direction of group headquarters. The management of southern provincial entities, and especially county-level departments, will be simplified to emphasize their marketing and sales roles, and may not require the creation of separate departments for non-core business related departments such as human resources or finance.
According to the source, "the new structure will last until at least the end of 2009."
