Operators Announce August 2008 Subscriber Totals

China's four main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for August 2008.
Mobile subscriber uptake was up slightly from July's total of 7.6 mln to 7.7 mln in August. Of this total, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) added 7.2 mln subs to reach 428.9 mln. In contrast, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added only 510,000 new subs (adding 910,000 GSM subs and losing 400,000 CDMA subs) to reach 171.8 mln (approximately 129.5 mln GSM subs and nearly 42.4 mln CDMA subs). Of total new subs added in August, China Mobile took 93%, bringing its share of China's total mobile user base to 71.4%.
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) lost 690,000 fixed-line subs, dropping its total to 213.6 mln, while China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) lost 410,000 fixed-line subs for a total of 107.8 mln.
Broadband continued to see strong growth in August, with China Telecom adding 690,000 new broadband users to reach just under 41.5 mln and Netcom adding 270,000 to reach nearly 24.3 mln.
