Rumor: Baofeng Obtains Online Broadcasting License
BiaNews, 9/03/08
A source at media player software developer Baofeng has revealed that the company recently received an Online Audio-Visual Broadcasting License, allowing its subsidiary Baofeng Media to become a provider of online media.
The recently released 2008 version of Baofeng's media player client included a "Baofeng Media" module to allow users to access a collection of approximately 20 mln video files. Users can directly stream video files through the new client, whereas previous versions of the client required users to enter the path to a local file or the full URL of an online video.
Baofeng CEO Feng Xin said the company will continue to focus mainly on video playback services rather than transitioning to content provision. The videos currently available through Baofeng's client are provided by Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), Joy.cn, Tudou and other video content providers.
