Operators Announce July 2008 Subscriber Totals

China's four main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for July 2008.
Mobile subscriber uptake was down from June's total of 8.6 mln to 7.6 mln in July. Of this total, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) added 7.1 mln subs to reach 421.7 mln. In contrast, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added only 540,000 new subs (adding 950,000 GSM subs and losing 410,000 CDMA subs) to reach 171.3 mln (128.6 mln GSM subs and 42.8 mln CDMA subs). Of total new subs added in July, China Mobile took 93%, bringing its share of China's total mobile user base to 71.1%.
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) lost 600,000 fixed-line subs, dropping its total to 214.3 mln, with China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) waving goodbye to 300,000 fixed-line subs for a total of 108.2 mln.
Broadband continued to see strong growth in July, with China Telecom adding 810,000 new broadband users to reach 40.8 mln and Netcom adding 630,000 to reach under 24.0 mln.
