Update: MIIT Cuts Fees for Handset Testing
China Business News, 8/13/08
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)';s China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR) has announced that from August 1, it reduced verification tests for GSM phones by 10 items, and reduced tests for CDMA phones by 11 items. It is also reducing testing fees by approximately 33%. Zhao Zhixin, general manager for Chinese handset manufacturer Huayu, indicated that previously, testing fees for a GSM phone were around RMB 300,000, but under the new pricing structure this would be reduced to between RMB 230,000 and RMB 240,000.
A spokesperson for a Shenzhen-based mobile phone design company stated that the move was part of a series of government measures designed to provide a path for illegal handset manufacturers to become legitimate, and help combat illegal and counterfeit handsets.
