In its recently released 22nd Development Status Report on the Chinese Internet, covering the 6-month period from January 1 to June 30, 2008, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) stated that online games currently rank 7th among all Chinese Internet applications, with a penetration rate of 58.3%. The report added that over 147 mln Chinese Internet users play online games, an increase of 22.93 mln compared to 6 months ago. The report also states that among gamers, 53% (78.15 mln) play role playing games (RPG), with this group of players averaging 11.9 hours of game time a week.
Editor's Note: In this report, CNNIC defines an "online gamer" as any survey respondent who reported playing any kind of online game (e.g. MMORPG, stand-alone casual game, platform-based casual game, browser game, etc.) at least once during the 6-month period covered by the survey. As a result, the total number of online gamers cited in this report is significantly higher than that shown in many other industry reports, which often define "online gamer" more narrowly as someone who plays online games at least once a month.
