China Telecom to Procure 5 mln CDMA Handsets

Multiple handset manufacturers have confirmed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) will procure 5 mln CDMA handsets. The majority of these will be positioned at the lower end of the price spectrum, in preparation for use by subscribers to China Telecom's PHS service that are expected to switch to China Telecom's CDMA network. A source at China Telecom revealed that the company is currently working on creating a brand name for the new phones, with Tianyi ("Heaven's Wing") and E-Hai ("E-Sea") being current contenders.
