Rumor: China Telecom Starts CDMA Equipment Bidding

C114, 7/15/08

A person close to China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) tacitly confirmed that the company had started its first round of CDMA network equipment and terminals bidding today.

According to an industry insider, the total tender - covering China Telecom's CDMA procurement spending through to the end of 2008 - will be valued at around RMB 17.3 bln. The same source added that the tender is mainly for core network equipment, but would "also include some terminal devices."

Editor's Note: A report featured yesterday in CWW suggested that the tender would be valued at around RMB 10 bln and would pertain to core networks, access networks, and the optimization and expansion of existing networks.
