China Mobile to Promote TD-SCDMA Services during Olympics
CWW, 7/11/08
China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has announced measures to promote TD-SCDMA during the Olympics. Starting in late July, customers who pre-purchase talk-time worth an amount equal or greater to the value of their data card will not be charged any USIM card fee, and can purchase the card itself for RMB 1. In August and September, TD-SCDMA users will receive full refunds for any voice or bandwidth costs incurred on the TD-SCDMA network. At the same time, in order to promote a "TD-SCDMA International Olympic Card" and a "TD-SCDMA Olympic Card" (both short term products), discounts will be given to mobile Internet traffic. Users of the international card will receive a discount on international telephone calls, while users of the non-international card will receive a discount on phone rental charges and pay no monthly fee for their subscription.
China Mobile has invested over RMB 50 mln in providing TD-SCDMA phones for rent during the Olympics. Those renting the phones must deposit 100% of the value of the handsets, and will be charged RMB 10 per day as a rental fee. A spokesperson for China Mobile claims that TD-SCDMA phone rentals will become a regular business service starting on October 1.
