Unicom Provides GPRS Roaming in HK, Taiwan
Sina Tech, 7/08/08
Beijing Unicom has announced the launch of an international GPRS roaming service to users of its Worldwind GSM package. The service aims for broad international adoption, with Hong Kong and Taiwan being the first two regions to have the service activated. No additional setup for the service is required, with GPRS functionality working exactly the same as it would on the mainland. The service is activated or deactivated when the user turns roaming voice services on or off, and once activated, users can go online or use other business services and be billed by bandwidth consumed. In Taiwan data will be billed at RMB 0.05 / KB, while the rate in Hong Kong will be RMB 0.02 / KB. Packages including overseas bandwidth quotas will not be offered to mainland users.
This service complements Beijing Unicom's existing "**100*" international callback service for roaming users. The **100* service reduces the cost of dialing users in the mainland when abroad to RMB 5.88 / minute, the same cost as receiving calls and about 70% of the non-discount rate. Users can already use the **100* service in 132 countries and regions including Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United States and Britain.
