Sohu IT, 7/04/08
The winning bidders in China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) second-round of procurement for TD-SCDMA handsets have confirmed that the company expects its first batch of terminals to be delivered on July 10. According to China Mobile's schedule, manufacturers will deliver the terminals in two batches, with the second batch due for delivery on July 20.
Luo Zhongsheng, general manager for ZTE's (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) TD-SCDMA line of handsets, has stated that "ZTE will not have a problem delivering the units by this date, but that this delivery schedule could be difficult for firms that haven't prepared in advance, as the normal production lead time for mobile handsets is around 25 days." Samsung also expressed confidence it could hit the deadline, and stated that its TD-SCDMA handsets have already entered into production.
Editor's Note: In China Mobile's second round of TD-SCDMA terminal bidding, ZTE has won orders for 61,000 handsets and Samsung 20,000. For more background on this topic, please see "Update: Details of TD-SCDMA Terminal Bidding Results", MD 7/02/08 issue.
