CMMB to Be Combined with TD-SCDMA

At the opening of a CMMB mobile phone TV experience center in Beijing today, Sun Zhaohui, deputy director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT)'s Administrative Bureau of Radio Stations, revealed that SARFT and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) are conducting joint research on the combination of CMMB and TD-SCDMA modules. "Once we make a breakthrough in the technology, we will enhance cooperation on content and profit-making commercial services." He also pointed out that CMMB-based mobile TV services will be provided free of charge this year, and that SARFT would order terminals through direct procurement, instead of through telecom operators' channels.
Yao Yonghui, deputy director of SARFT's Academy of Broadcasting Planning said that his organization had started cooperation with China Mobile over mobile handset TV content, while in terms of technology R&D, the combination of CMMB and TD-SCDMA will be a priority.
Beijing's new CMMB mobile phone TV experience center is located in the Dinghao Electronics Shopping Center in Zhongguancun.
