CCTV to Finalize Olympic Broadcasting Rights
Southern Metropolitan News, 6/21/08
Wang Li, executive director at Chinese television station CCTV, has revealed that online broadcasting rights for the Olympics will be finalized by the end of this month. In addition, CCTV will require all websites given broadcasting rights to block any web traffic originating from IP addresses outside of mainland China and Macau. Reportedly, even users who try to access the broadcasts via proxy will be blocked. Chinese online video site UUSee, which was recently awarded Olympic broadcasting rights, will use the opportunity to introduce advertisements to its webpage broadcasts, in addition to the current advertising that it places in its downloadable client software.
Editors Note: As the Chinese government has been unable to prevent users inside of China from accessing restricted websites via proxies, Chinese online video sites will likely find it highly challenging to restrict proxy traffic, assuming that a user had set up a proxy server in China.
