Chinese Tech Start-Ups Win Recognition

At the recently concluded CHINICT 2008 telecom and IT industry conference in Beijing, several Chinese start-ups won recognition as leaders in their respective sub-sectors. Award recipients included the following companies:

51.com: Chinese-language social networking site boasting 110 mln registered users, among which 27 mln are active users who login at least once per month, and average daily totals of 350 mln page views (PV), 4 mln blog updates, and 11 mln photo uploads. Headquartered in Shanghai.

56.com: Personal media and video sharing platform founded in Beijing in April 2005, reporting daily averages of 120 mln videos viewed, over 100,000 videos uploaded, and 200,000 photo slideshows created.

Etonenet: Provider of services and integrated solutions to China's mobile marketing industry, established in Shanghai in 2000. The company offers solutions allowing businesses to follow a "closed loop process" for conducting mobile marketing campaigns, from strategy definition and content design, delivery and interaction, to post-campaign performance analysis. Etonenet's service covers various mobile media, including SMS, MMS, WAP, and Brew.

Hdt Holdings Technologies: Rich media advertising and technology firm founded in 1999. Headquartered in Shanghai, with branch offices in Beijing and GuangZhou, employing over 270 people. Serves 250+ Fortune 500 and leading domestic advertisers and over 30 advertising agencies in China. Boasts strong business partnerships with over 100 major portals and vertical websites in China.

HiPiHi: Developer and operator of 3D virtual world platforms, founded in Beijing in April 2006, with a vision to usher in a new era of 3D virtual world experiences. Employs a staff of 60. The company touts itself as the earliest and largest China-based virtual world platform, with over 50,000 registered users by May 2008. HiPiHi announced the beginning of public beta testing on April 18, 2008, after almost a year of private testing.

Madhouse: One of China's largest mobile advertising networks, providing mobile marketing solutions to bring advertisers together with mobile publishers. Established in Shanghai in March 2006. Offers three main value propositions: a fully-automated, in-house system that serves specially targeted ads to mobile websites and client media, and provides detailed reports on performance; a mobile ad network consisting of over 1,100 major publisher sites; and a platform of mobile marketing solutions and campaign management services such as mobile interactive messaging platforms, site building and visual optimization, location-based SMS broadcasting, Bluecasting and 2-Dimentional Code technologies.

Payzy: Advertising platform provider which connects WAP sites, mobile communities, and loyalty clubs to help advertisers reach targeted groups of consumers with permission-based ads. Tracks consumer behavior, identifying key influencers, and rewards consumers with incentives for taking action. China operations, based in Shanghai, were commercially launched in April 2008. Payzy had 20,000 members in the first 45 days of activity.

PPLive: P2P streaming online video platform founded in Shanghai at the end of 2004, boasting over 100 mln installed users globally. Offers various services, including online live broadcasting, video on demand, video aggregation and searching in both web and client software platforms.

Qunar: Travel information aggregator and vertical search provider based in Beijing. Aggregates information on air tickets, accommodations, tour packages, and visas, allowing users to search and compare prices for flights and accommodation from over 400 airlines and more than 15,000 hotels. Has over 15 mln monthly unique users.

Yeepay: Independent Beijing-based third-party e-payment service provider, serving merchants such as EachNet (eBay China), Dang Dang, Huicong, Bertelsmann, Baidu, TOM, Shanda, and KingSoft. Yeepay's payment solution enables consumers and merchants to send and receive payments through the Internet, mobile phone or telephone.

Youku: Online video-sharing platform provider, which allows users to search, view and upload video clips. Based in Beijing. Generates revenue through placement of video, picture, search advertisements, sponsorships and wireless value-added services. Features both professional media and user generated content.
