MII Announces April 2008 Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information (MII) has released its April 2008 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 67.8 bln (USD 9.7 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to just under RMB 262 bln (USD 37.5 bln), up 9.9% over the same 4-month period of 2007.
Mobile subscribers grew by 8.9 mln to just under 584 mln. A total of 229 bln SMS were sent during the first four months of the year, a 25.4% increase YoY.
Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the ninth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 1 mln to 360 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined for the eleventh straight month, with a net loss of 1 mln subs to just under 79.5 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased slightly, by 26,000, to 280.55 mln.
Broadband added 1.5 mln new registered users to reach 72.9 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 200,000 users, dropping to 16.5 mln.
