Telecom World, 5/21/08
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) is in the process of constructing Wi-Fi networks in eight municipalities and provinces including Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Fujian, and Sichuan. The networks already have nearly 8 mln users, and encompass over 10,000 network nodes. By the end of this year, the Shanghai "Wireless City" network will provide coverage through 3,000 wireless hotspots. China Telecom is in the process of accelerating its deployment of Wi-Fi base stations, and has begun soliciting a new round of network bids in 21 provinces following comprehensive testing.
China Telecom chairman and CEO Wang Xiaochu has said that the company will implement account-based roaming services for Wi-Fi this year, and that if Wi-Fi services should prove mature, China Telecom could integrate Wi-Fi services with its mobile services after it receives a wireless license, allowing users to go online wirelessly in areas without Wi-Fi coverage.
