Chinese Websites Mourn Earthquake Victims
ChinaByte, 5/19/08
Following a Chinese State Council announcement that from May 19 - 21 China would observe an official period of mourning for victims of the Wenchuan earthquake, telecom and communication authorities have instructed all websites to redirect their sports, entertainment, and culture channels to earthquake relief-related pages. All advertisements are to be pulled for the duration of the same period. In addition, updates to any content in entertainment and video channels not related to the earthquake are to be suspended. Featuring humorous content, gossip, and other entertainment-related content will be strictly banned. Online search engines are to halt provision of search and download services for MP3 files and other audio and video content.
Editor's Note: From this morning, black and white have become the dominant colors in many of the major websites (e.g. Sina, Sohu, Netease, Tencent, Baidu, Google.cn, Taobao, Tianya, and others), including company logos and home pages.
