Oriental Cable, Retail Chains Partner on HDTV
Sina Tech, 4/29/08
Oriental Cable Network (OCN) has formed a strategic partnership with Yongle and Gome (0493.HK) in Shanghai in order to expand the market for high-definition television in the city. HDTV operator OCN will provide a technical platform allowing the two appliance retailers to sell high-definition subscriptions and value-added services via over one hundred outlets. By May 1, eleven stores will have HDTV signals, and this will later be expanded to fifty of sixty outlets.
Shanghai Interactive TV (SiTV) GM Gao Yue said that to date OCN has three HDTV channels - CCTV HD, featuring mainly Olympic content; high-definition movie channel CHC (from Huacheng Digital Movie & TV Co., Ltd.); and sporting channel SiTV New Vision, featuring NBA games. The company has also started producing games and entertainment content.
Editor's Note: SiTV is currently promoting HDTV service at a discounted price. The price for purchasing a standard high definition set-top-box (conditional access card included) plus a content package of 3 HDTV channels is RMB 1,950, rather than the standard price of RMB 5,550. Subscribers to this package receive CCTV's HDTV channel for free, and 18 free months of SiTV's HD "New Vision" channel, and CHC HD movie channel.
