MII Announces March 2008 Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information (MII) has released its March 2008 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 72.1 bln (USD 10.3 bln).
Mobile subscribers grew by 9.4 mln to more than 575 mln. A total of 175 bln SMS were sent during the first three months of the year, a 28.8% increase YoY.
Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the eighth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 1.13 mln to 361 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined for the tenth straight month, with a net loss of 1.3 mln subs to 80.5 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased 0.17 mln to 280.6 mln.
Broadband added 1.67 mln new registered users to reach 71.5 mln, while dial-up Internet access resumed its earlier trend of decline, losing 2.75 mln users.
