Ericsson Wins RMB 10 bln in Network Expansion Contracts

Swedish telecommunications equipment provider Ericsson has announced that it has signed GSM expansion agreements with both China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) worth RMB 9.1 bln and RMB 1 bln respectively. Under the terms of the contracts, Ericsson will expand China Mobile's GSM and GPRS network coverage in 19 provinces, and expand China Unicom's GSM network in 10 provinces, including the capital Beijing. Work on the project has already begun, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The contract signing ceremony was attended by both the Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao, and the Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, who is currently visiting China.
