Marbridge Consulting, 3/25/08
China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has released its February 2008 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 60.8 bln (USD 8.4 bln), up 10.1% over 2006.
Mobile subscribers grew by 9.5 mln to more than 565 mln. Although the mobile teledensity figure the MII lists - 41.6 - remains unchanged from December 2007, Marbridge estimates the February 2008 figure at 42.8. A total of 116 bln SMS were sent during the first two months of this year, a 33.2% increase YoY.
The PHS subscriber base declined for the ninth straight month, with a net loss of 1.48 mln subs to 81.8 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line growth was negative for the sixth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 0.28 mln to 280.4 mln. Again, while the fixed line teledensity figure given by the MII - 27.8 - remains unchanged from December 2007, Marbridge estimates the February 2008 figure at 27.4.
Broadband added 1.48 mln new registered users to reach 69.8 mln, while dial-up Internet access reversed a long-stand trend of decline, adding 85,000 registered users to reach 17.5 mln.
