Shanghai to Offer City-Wide Wireless Networking by 2010
China Business News, 3/06/08
The Shanghai Municipal Informatization Commission and Shanghai Telecom have committed to providing city-wide high-speed wireless broadband by 2010. This will be realized via a number of technologies, with 3G, WiMAX and 4G all possible choices. An official with the Informatization Commission indicated that WiMAX is currently the usual choice for urban wireless projects, but widespread use of the technology in China is a sensitive issue and will require further consideration. Funding for the project will come from a range of sources.
In 2008 Shanghai will put a number of trial urban wireless zones in place, with various locations currently competing to host these. Shanghai has a good foundation on which to build, including a China Net backbone node with capacity of 50G. The Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) cable due to go into operation this year will have capacity of 640G. 85% of users in the city have broadband access speeds of 2M, and 80% can get speeds of up to 4M. There are 3 mln broadband subscribers in Shanghai.
In 2007 Shanghai installed 2,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in public areas, with business areas in Xuhui, Jiading and Pudong enjoying wireless broadband services.
