MII Announces January 2008 Statistics

China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has released its January 2008 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 61 bln (USD 8.5 bln), up 10% over 2006.
Mobile subscribers grew by 8.5 mln to more than 556 mln. Although the mobile teledensity figure the MII lists - 41.6 - remains unchanged from December 2007, Marbridge estimates the January 2008 figure at 42.3. Over 55 bln SMS were sent during the month, a 32.8% increase YoY.
The PHS subscriber base declined for the eighth straight month, with a net loss of 1.3 mln subs to 83.3 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line growth was negative for the fifth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 0.2 mln to 280.7 mln. Again, while the fixed line teledensity figure given by the MII - 27.8 - remains unchanged from December 2007, Marbridge estimates the January 2008 figure at 27.7.
Broadband added 1.85 mln new registered users to reach 68.3 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 2.05 mln registered users, dropping to 17.4 mln.
