Rumor: China Mobile to Block SPs from Identifying Users

Iimedia.cn, 2/28/08

According to an inside source at China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), the company is planning to update its MID algorithms in the near future in order to prevent SPs from abusing applications databases to illegally gain access to users' phone numbers. The plan under consideration includes adding letters, slashes, and other forms of characters.

The source says that implementation of the new MID will affect SPs' ability to distinguish between and authenticate users; China Mobile had reportedly originally planned to announce the new algorithms earlier, but decided to wait until the end of the month in consideration of these factors.

Since the end of 2005, China Mobile has prevented WAP sites outside its own Monternet from transmitting users' phone numbers and model data.
