China Mobile to Increase Investment in Pakistani Network

During 2008, China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) Pakistani subsidiary, CMPak, will invest a further USD 800 mln in network expansion. The company currently has 2 mln of Pakistan's 70 mln mobile subscribers, and hopes to expand its market share by 20% to 25% by the end of the year, strengthening its position against Pakistan's 5 other mobile operators.

China Mobile purchased Paktel in 2007 for USD 460 mln. That year, China Mobile invested an additional USD 700 mln in the new acquisition, with 400 mln going to network expansion. ZTE, Alcatel-Shanghai Bell, Ericsson, and Huawei shared the GSM network expansion contracts in 2007.
