Rumor: CMCC to Defer TD-SCDMA Handset Procurement
South Metropolitan News, 1/29/08
An official within the TD-SCDMA industry has indicated that the new ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) dual-mode dual-standby TD-SCDMA handset he is testing is not yet ready for commercial use, due to slow switching between TD-SCDMA and GSM networks and delays in video calls.
According to this source, ZTE's handsets are the most technologically mature, and investment and R&D limitations at other manufacturers mean they are even further from meeting China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) requirements. Only products from a few suppliers, including ZTE, Samsung and Lenovo (0992.HK), can be described as passable. However, China Mobile is set to wait until at least ten manufacturers have acceptable products before launching large-scale procurement.
Guangdong Mobile has started work on a TD-SCDMA Experience Store, due to be completed after Chinese New Year, to allow users to see 3G applications such as mobile TV, video calling and remote closed-circuit video surveillance.
