Rumor: Telecom Industry Restructuring Plan Approved
Sohu IT, 1/14/08
A source close to the telecom reorganization has said that one recently rumored proposal has been approved, but that changes in personnel are to take place first. The CPC Central Committee's Organization Department has held talks with a number of key industry figures, with moves expected no later than March.
Wang Jianzhou, currently president of China Mobile, is set to retire and be replaced by TD-SCDMA proponent and experienced corporate manager Xi Guohua, currently Vice-Minister at the Ministry of Information Industry (MII). China Telecom president Wang Xiaochu meanwhile will become senior vice-minister at the MII. China Netcom chairman Zhang Chunjiang will take over Wang's post at China Telecom, where he will complete the purchase of Unicom's CDMA network. Unicom's chairman Chang Xiaobing will remain in his position in order to purchase China Netcom and then head up the newly merged company formed by Netcom and Unicom's GSM network.
