Rumor: TD-SCDMA Will Miss Olympics

Sohu IT, 12/29/07

According to information sent to a source by a key TD-SCDMA supporter, TD-SCDMA services may not be ready in time for the 2008 Olympics.

According to the source implementation of TD-SCDMA in Beijing is still lagging behind schedule, with base station locations the major obstacle. Two major universities have refused to host base stations, with the consequent need to re-plan base station coverage having a major impact on progress.

Results of China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) recently launched procurement of TD-SCDMA handsets for internal tests will only be announced in February, meaning that the handsets will not be delivered until March or April and service testing will only be completed in May or June - meaning a second round of procurement can only take place in July - too late for the Olympics in August.
