National Handset Mobile TV Standard Selection Resumed
Southern Metropolitan News, 12/26/07
Previously halted testing for China's national mobile TV standard was resumed today, and will last one month. CMMB remains conspicuously omitted from the list of official candidate standards. Evaluation is being handled by three groups of judges: a "systems group" is responsible for assessing feasibility of the overall solution; a "testing group" for testing and examining technology criteria; and an "observer group" to ensure impartiality and transparency during the entire process.
Industry experts supporting other candidate standards commented that CMMB is a good solution, but that it will take at least another 3 years to mature into a "combined satellite-terrestrial" technology using only domestically developed technologies. "It's not possible to put it into real commercial use before the Olympics."
However, an insider from Innofidei emphasized that a CMMB-based mobile TV network can already support broadcasts of around 10 TV channels, with access by a wide variety of terminals such as MP4, GPS, PC, and receiver module-equipped memory cards.
