China Begins Mass Production of Plastic Optical Fiber

Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, 12/13/07

Shenzhen firms Zhongjiyuan Zhuanlicheng and Dasheng Optoelectronic Technology have joined with international plastic optical fiber (POF) Ethernet manufacturers to carry out construction and product testing of a 100-meter 100M POF domestic network. The network allows high-definition VOD and closed circuit TV, and high-speed data transmission. Built with Chinese proprietary technology, the network costs in the region of RMB 1,000, only about one-eighth the cost of equivalent overseas products.

Compared to the usual glass optical fiber, POF can be bent at will and is easier to connect. As manufacturing techniques for low-loss POF are complex, the technology had remained the domain of US, Japanese and German firms. Also, the high-speed, reliable and secure nature of the network makes it ideal for military applications, so products are tightly controlled and expensive - a meter of telecoms grade POF costs up to RMB 100.

In September, with assistance from the Chinese Academy of Science's research institutes, and various Chinese universities, Zhongjiyuan Zhuanlicheng and Dasheng Optoelectronic Technology mastered key technologies for manufacturing telecoms grade POF and equipment and China's first POF production line started operation - with products costing only one-tenth of international prices. The line is currently producing 360,000 meters per day.
