MII to Standardize Handset Accessories
China Securities Journal, 11/29/07
At the 4th China Mobile Marketing and Ecommerce Development Conference, senior engineer at the Ministry of Information Industry (MII)'s China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR) He Guili has said the academy is working on common standards for mobile phone batteries, headsets and contact lists.
LENS: MII's standardization efforts in the handset accessory sector began with handset chargers (see MII Makes Handset Charger Standard Compulsory," MW 5/18/07 issue). Although some vendors complained that standardization would reduce their market share and bring down profitability, it was applauded by consumers for bringing greater convenience.
Standardization also fits into the MII's efforts to curb pollution caused by electronic and IT products (see China to Establish New Electronic Waste Management Organizations," MW 7/20/07 issue). According to the MII, 20% of handset users in China change their mobile phones on a yearly basis, meaning 20% of handset accessories are discarded each year.
