Tencent 'Taotao' Begins Closed Beta Testing

Tencent's (0700.HK) Twitter-clone, "Taotao", has begun closed beta testing. At nine o'clock this morning, Tencent announced to netizens that there were 5,000 free test accounts available, which were all signed-up within half an hour. New plugins for Taotao were also announced, including Taotao friends, private messages, multimedia messages and a flash plugin that encourages users to embed Taotao into their own blogs on blogging services such as Sohu, Sina, Netease or MSN.

When Taotao was launched in August this year, there was a huge surge in traffic for the official Taotao website, but over the last few months, traffic volume has been stagnant, with a daily average of 6,450 unique IP addresses, and 22,575 page-views.
