China Aims for Pre-Olympics TD-HSDPA Launch
Communications World Weekly, 11/22/07
According to experts, TD-HSDPA may be in commercial use in time for the Olympics. Network quality testing of HSDPA functionality on TD-SCDMA systems has been completed by the China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR) and China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) own research institute, with indoor TD-HSDPA testing, using Commit terminals, to start in December.
All of Datang Mobile's TD-SCDMA range can be switched to TD-HSDPA via a software upgrade, and will then support combined HSDPA and R4 networks. Designs have been finalized for most products.
Potevio (Putian) has also completed development of single-carrier wave TD-SCDMA HSDPA Radio Access Network with commercial HSDPA products launched. ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) has launched the MF330 HSDPA data card, the first domestically-produced card to have taken part in commercial trials. Huawei meanwhile has launched the first HSDPA data card for commercial use, the E620, and a TD-HSDPA router.
TD-SCMDA chipsets from manufacturers including Spreadtrum and Commit will provide support for HSDPA as of the end of the year, along with adopting 90-nm technology.
