Information Times, 11/06/07
A CCID Consulting report shows that IPTV user numbers in China reached 1.012 million in the third quarter of 2007, a figure expected to reach 1.187 million by year-end - double the growth of the same period last year.
Some areas in Guangdong are already running quasi-IPTV services. Guangdong Telecom has been promoting its iTV service mainly in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhuhai, Shantou and Zhongshan. A Guangdong Telecom official revealed that the iTV service has 20,000 users in Guangzhou, and is growing rapidly in rural areas with several thousand users in the Conghua region. Guangdong Telecom is to continue expanding bandwidth capacity to meet the growing demand.
CCID predicts rapid and stable growth for IPTV in China, with 21.927 million users - breaking the 20 million user mark - in 2011.
China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) has seen slower growth in user numbers, due to a nationwide implementation of AVS-IPTV. The number of Netcom customers using IPTV in Henan province fell from 36.4% in 2006 to 23.5% this year. Drops were also seen in Zhejiang (20.9% to 19.3%) and Heilongjiang (18.4% to 17%).
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) saw substantial increases in user numbers, with a jump from 11.1% to 24.1% in Shanghai - making it the fastest-growing commercial IPTV trial.
