China's Next-Gen Internet to Start Commercial Use in 2013
Economic Information Daily, 12/13/12
A reporter for Economic Information Daily learned from a member of the China Next-Generation Internet (CNGI) expert committee that the CNGI will begin commercial operations in 2013, and is expected to complete first-stage commercial trials at the end of 2013 ahead of full-scale commercial deployment in 2014 and 2015. Parties involved in preliminary testing efforts - including all three major telecom operators, telecom equipment makers including Huawei and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), and internet companies including Tencent (0700.HK) and Hangzhou-based C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao - have completed testing and will begin commercial use of the technology next year.
The "Views on First-Generation Internet Development and Construction During the 12th Five-Year Plan Period," issued by seven government ministries including the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), calls for commercial adoption of the CNGI to take place in two stages during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015). The first stage, which will involve the development of small-scale commercial trials of IPv6 networks, will cover the period from 2011 to 2013. The second stage, from 2014 to 2015, will see full commercial adoption of IPv6 networking.
China's major telecom operators are reportedly actively preparing for commercial adoption of CNGI next year. As of June 26, 2012, all three operators had applied for a vast block of IPv6 addresses. China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) received a 4099/32 address block, while China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) received 4098/32 blocks. (IPv6 addresses are indicated by a number followed by a slash sign. The decimal number that follows the slash sign denotes the length of the network prefix in bits: 1/32 block contains 2^96 addresses, or roughly 7.9 * 10^28 addresses.)
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and other government ministries expect investment in CNGI and IPv6 to reach RMB 50 bln in 2015.
