Li Jingsheng, chief of the television department within China's State Administration of Press and Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), said today that SAPPRFT will strengthen supervision of online video series to keep in line with traditional cultural values. Li made the remarks at the 2015 China National Television Industry's Annual Conference in Beijing.
Luo Jianhui, head of SAPPRFT's online video department, said that online video content blindly follows trends, is crudely produced and generally low-quality, and lacks the ability to understand certain subject matters, particularly those to do with forensic investigations, monsters, violence, and other content with adverse effects. Luo added that online video series are notorious for skirting moral and legal lines, intentionally attacking value systems, tend to include vulgar content, and pander to the subjective tastes of consumers.
SAPPRFT is currently examining how it will deal with these problems, but Liu Jianhui said that his organization will increase supervision of online video series and create standards that are in line with those to which television and movie businesses must adhere. For example, content that TV series are prohibited from broadcasting will also apply to web series. SAPPRFT will also improve its evaluation processes of web series, and confirm who is responsible for online video series at various online video platforms. Online video platforms must train staff responsible for evaluating online video content, and must report previous series and content that have incited heated discussions for further inspection by a content specialist.
