China to Require Internet TVs Use Homegrown Smart TV OS

Hunan Daily, 12/25/15

China's State Administration of Press and Publication, Radio, Film and Television's (SAPPRFT) Science and Technology Department and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)'s Electronic Information Department recently announced a new smart TV operating system, TVOS 2.0. The two regulatory agencies also indicated that they plan to require the use of this indigenously developed smart TV OS for set-top boxes throughout China.

This means that TVOS 2.0 will be the SAPPRFT's officially sponsored operating system for smart TVs, and that Internet TV devices not running TVOS, which are used by many Chinese consumers, may be banned in the future.
