Baidu Unveils Self-developed DuWear Smartwatch OS
Sohu IT, 4/15/15
Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) recently launched the official website for DuWear, its self-developed OS for smart watches.
The Android-based DuWear incorporates Baidu's voice search technology, letting users perform searches and get information on weather and stocks by talking into their watch. Users can also make micropayments from the Baidu Wallet payment service by saying the phrase "I want to make a payment" into their device.
DuWear is also embedded with Baidu's mapping technology, allowing users to get real-time information on positioning and to check surrounding points of interest. There is also a special section for smart watches in Baidu's Mobile Assistant app.
A spokesperson for DuWear said Baidu is working to develop an open OS ecosystem for watches, and is open to working with manufacturers to provide basic solutions. It is also developing SDK and app market support for developers.
According to the official DuWear site, there are already versions of DuWear for Samsung, Sony and LG devices. Baidu plans to release DuWear firmware available for download towards the end of this month. The first generation of DuWear watches are expected to be released in June on Baidu's online store.
