Alipay Expands Offline Payment Network through Third-party Agencies

eBrun, 1/06/15

Chinese third-party payment processor Alipay has begun soliciting third-party partners to help the company grow its offline payment network.

The partnership will focus on expanding the number of merchants that can accept payments powered by Alipay's Alipay Wallet smartphone app, although Alipay has yet to release any numbers relating to the total number of partners is has signed at present. The payment platform has signed a rumored 10 authorized representatives in Shanghai, with figures in other cities unknown.

The partnership agreements strictly state that Alipay payment partners are not allowed to form other online to offline (O2O) payment agreements, namely partnerships with WeChat Pay, the embedded payment platform of Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat mobile messaging app.

Alipay Wallet lets users complete offline payments by producing a barcode on their smartphones that is scanned by merchants to process payment.
