Xiaomi to Introduce Mobile Callback Dialing App
Sohu, 11/28/14
Beijing-based Android device maker Xiaomi will soon unveil a free calling service, LiveTalk ("Xiaomi Changliao"), according to an industry source. The new app uses a callback dialing method to provide free calling or low-cost calling to users, as long as one user has installed the LiveTalk app. LiveTalk users first enter a number they wish to call, and will receive a callback from a telecom operator connecting them with their desired call target. The model allows both parties to receive calls, taking advantage of the free inbound calling policy of many of China's telecom operators. Some of LiveTalk's features require users to download Xiaomi's Android-based user-interface MIUI before they can be used.
LiveTalk is currently undergoing closed beta testing that will likely be expanded to open beta shortly.
Xiaomi recently received a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) license from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and the new app may serve as a precursor to a Xiaomi launch of MVNO services.
