Rumor: WeChat to Add Jingdong Shopping Channel
Ebrun, 4/18/14
According to an industry insider, Beijing-based B2C e-commerce platform JD.com (Jingdong) and Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application have reached an agreement under which WeChat will grant Jingdong high-level access to the "Discover" channel of the WeChat app. Through the partnership, Jingdong will create a new "Shopping" channel which will appear alongside the "Moments" and "Games" channels on WeChat's Discover page. There will be three categories of goods within the Shopping channel, including "Brand Name Products," "Discounts," and "New Products." The shopping channel will support Tencent's WeChat Pay payment service as well as COD. Additionally, the "Specials" sub-channel within WeChat's "My Bank Card" channel will be deleted.
WeChat's "Paipai WeStore" ("Paipai Weidian") program, which helps merchants on Tencent's Paipai platform sell products on WeChat public accounts, will be taken over by Jingdong and renamed "Jingdong WeStore." The program provides WeChat public accounts with product sales and CRM services.
