Youku Tudou, Huawei Launch Internet TV STB
Netease Tech, 4/16/14
Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer Huawei and online video site operator Youku Tudou (NYSE: YOKU) have jointly released an internet TV set-top box (STB) product, the "Joy Box" ("Yue He"), in partnership with licensed Internet TV operator China International Broadcasting Network (CIBN).
The STB integrates video content from Youku, Tudou, and CIBN, with Youku alone providing roughly 7,000 authorized programs, including TV series, films, and original content produced by Youku. Joy Box users who have purchased premium Youku memberships, currently priced at RMB 20/month, will have access to the full range of membership services already provided to Youku's PC and mobile VIP users, including a limited amount of free programming each month, accelerated streaming of online video content, cloud-based sharing of content across multiple devices, ad-free video viewing, and 50% discounts on premium content purchases, among others.
The STB will be released on April 21 on Beijing-based B2C e-commerce platform JD.com (Jingdong). The retail price of the device has not yet been revealed.
